Chipping Day and Picnic

art jackson, September 29, 2025September 29, 2025

Chipping Day and BBQ were a Huge Success!

Some fun facts:
· 28 properties participated
· Crews made 29 stops
· Approximately 100 – 5X5X6 piles were chipped
· All this took a little over 6 hours
· 5 properties chose to keep their mulch
· Firefighters don’t need lunch or bathroom breaks😊

Lessons Learned for Next Year:
· Wear ear protection!
· Safety goggles and even masks are a good idea when the breeze is blowing the “wrong” direction
· Those small branches (less than 18 inches) are a pain to pick up off the ground. Next year, put smaller branches in containers that can just be dumped into the chipper or the trash
· Bring a rake
· This time of year, worked out well. Folks had time to get their property cleared and it was relatively cool.

Thanks to Deb Bullock, our Firewise Coordinator, for all her work on helping to put this together and “field work” on Chipping Day. Deb will be able to report these hours to the Firewise Program which ensures our continued Firewise certification and also provides money via a grant to the Tri-Lakes Fire department. Their goal for next year is to use this money for a full-time fire mitigation/chipping crew and a truck to take away wood chips.

Thanks to participating Wissler Ranch homeowners and especially the volunteers who showed up and made a HUGE difference in the workload and made this a success!

Thanks to Pete Popp for sweeping up afterwards. This saved property owners A LOT of work.

Thanks also to Ric Petersen and Brian Standjord for hauling away and spreading wood chips.
A note of thanks from Ric:

To our new friends at Wissler Ranch,
We want to thank all who participated in the chipping event yesterday, and to everyone that gifted us all that mulch! I apologize to the few of you that I couldn’t take your mulch, the chipper guys didn’t stop while I was running loads back to our place. Thanks also to Pete Popp for his original idea and input to get us the mulch, to Brian Strandjord for spending most of his day spreading the mulch on our lot, and to Kristin Crowell for organizing and coordinating it all.
This was a big help as we revegetate our lot after the construction of our new home on Twisted Pine. Thanks again!
Ric& Terri Peterson
